So about a month ago, half the company I work for was divided into two groups. The first half went to one place the next morning and the other group went to another place. The group I was with was told they wouldn't have a job after Dec 31st.
I put off looking for another job until such time as I felt interested. Kind-of. I looked a little bit... found a position as a forest communicator or some such thing in British Columbia where I'd be responsible for "marketing" environmentally-sensitive procedures to big business to convince them to profit from the forests but do so 'responsibly.' I also looked into teaching here in town, but there aren't any positions open for my majors and subs make less than $11/hr. so that was bonk too. I looked into teaching English abroad, thinking that I could maybe get down to Brazil and teach English while I learn portuguese and fuck 3 or 4 brazilian women every night... the only thing I found up that alley was stints in Korea, and I've already beentheredonethat.
So today, I got asked by to, essentially, switch lists. They have a position that needs filling and it's something I managed on the other side of the building, so of everyone under the roof, apparently everyone with an office looked at each other and said "<insert my name here>. He's the one." It's odd though. Because as non-plussed as I was about getting laid off (no ego: simply from a business/skillset standpoint, it really was the dumbest move on their part to get rid of me and at least four other people on that list of 130... I really am a total badass at this sort of thing) I'm just not all that excited about getting re-hired. It's almost like it just makes sense and "fuck you for even thinking letting me go was a worthwhile proposition."
In their defense, no one where I work made the lists... that was done in Texas somewhere (dallas?), but still. Anyhoo... it's a decent thing. Not really good... Good would be me finding a job teaching, BUT it keeps the income rolling in, and I'm pretty sure there's a promotion in it for me just around the corner. So yeah. That happened today.
