You turn off the lights at first because you can. There is nothing to see, no need to see. In short order, you realize you can see still, that the lights never served a purpose. They were on for someone else, and someone else was never there. You lived for the thought of someone, someone who is not. Which is crazier - living your life with the lights out, or living your life for an imagined someone?
