as one 'nice guy' (and i believe i understand what you mean by using the term all too well) to another-
if this is the kind of energy you're getting from the people around you, then they can go to hell.
my advise- become a self sufficient unit.
when you learn to do that, the right kind of people start gravitating towards you- perhaps not many, but one right person equals ten thousand wrong ones.
i got a lot of inspiration from Henry Rollins.
doesn't matter if you like his music or not- his books are really cool, and his spoken word shows are awsome- you can find many of them on cd's.
i don't think there's anyone who's worth my time (and yours of course) if they feel indifferent about me- i'd rather be alone. and no- the amount of people around you, or who they are, do not define you in any way.
