I was leaving Target by my house and saw an older man kinda stumbling through the parking lot. Not sure if he was homeless or maybe starting the drink a little early. He comes to my car and I had the windows down, it looked like he wanted to talk to me. He stumbles by me and has a little trouble getting over the curb with grass on it. He comes down the other side, which is a 6-8" drop and starts doing a shuffle, like he came down too fast. At this point I had backed out of my car and started rolling forward. He shuffles and leans forward and then starts to go down. He bounced off of the trunk of a Honda with his head. I see this, gas it through my lane, hook a right and go down to the lane he was in. By the time I got there, 15-20 seconds had passed. There was one guy who tried and failed to help him up.
So I grab the guys hand and the other guy had him under his shoulder. A 3rd guy comes up and puts his hand under his other shoulder and he help him to his feet. We steady him, he is not bleeding, talking coherently stating his back gave out. So we walk him the 30 feet to his car and help him in the car. One guy asked 3 times if he wanted us to call an Ambulance. He said no he was OK. At this point there is not much we can do because of the Good Samaritan law that protects people who help. If they refuse help, you have to stop giving them help. He probably should have gone to the hospital at the minimum. He left a football sized dent in the rear deck lid of that Honda. I know it was a good deed, but I felt like I could have done more. He probably has a concussion or a monster head ache to say the least. Also should I have let the owner of the car he fell into (which was not his car) a note saying what happened? That person is in for a surprise. Hindsight is always 20/20 and there are things I should have done as I type this out. I shouldn't beat myself up for it but I did do a good thing and help him and and make sure he is OK to the best he is willing to let us help.
