I grew up in Connecticut, about 40 miles o utside of NYC. My brother was into the New York hardcore scene band like Minor Threat, Murphy's Law,etc.
So naturally being 4 years younger than him my controversial musical Statement was to listen to Hip-Hop. Not so much rap, but true hip-hop. Now there are many people who would think of my idea of hip-hop is narrow and uninformed, but it is my view.
There were a few artists I grabbed onto, for reasons unknow, that all seemed to be afrocentric and political. Now a fat white kid from a middle class family in the suburbs listening to Public Enemy and BDP, and Poor Righteous Teachers is definately a bird of a different color.
Imagine me rolling down the street in a prodominately white neighborhood, with my freind Tyrone (a 300 pound black man) with these lyrics poundin out the windows of my beat-up Beetle..
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps - Chuck D.
Now you may ask youself why the hell is this the topic of my journal today? Basically because I was scrolling through the GB's of Illegal MP3 I have downloaded from the newsgroups and came accross some old boggie Down Productions, and had to share....
