I just spent three hours job hunting.

I have fond memories of my father yelling at me that if I dyed my hair or put any more holes in my face, no one would ever hire me. That really isn't the issue here - it's that most of what's availible is either retail or food service that requires previous experience. My previous work experience is in the teaching and secretarial realms, so it doesn't count for much.

It seems like there has to be someplace desperate enough.

Try data entry. It's easy work if you're even slightly computer literate and most places don't care if you don't shower and wear the same thing 4 days in a row. let alone holes in your face and odd hair colors.
