I take the equality issue more or less "as read" -- equality before the law, equal rights, and so on. The idea of freely making choices to be however you'd like to be is a wider concept of equality, I think -- a general "equal treatment" kind of thing. (In the feminism group, there's a discussion of different concepts and meanings of "equality".)

But then the argument comes that we can't REALLY make truly free choices if we're constrained by old-fashioned notions of gender roles. In practice, tihs is kind of like saying that men are supposed to abandon all of their :masculine" tendencies, which have a negative connotation attached to them

But when they do that, women tend to reject them as wimps. This is the quandary I'm trying to get people in that thread to help solve. If we're going to have masculinity, what kind of masculinity should we have?

It's like pulling teeth in there though ...

(I'll take the zot risk. I doubt it'll happen but if it does it does, eh...)
