Hmmm, yesterday was interesting. I went to volunteer with the Marine Mammal Center, we got a call to go up to Mantesa (sp?) Beach to rescue a sea lion. We drove out there and stopped at one place, walked down a bunch of stairs and could see the little bugger way down the beach. So we walked back up the stairs and got in the truck to try to get a little closer. Went to a camp ground and got permission from the rangers to drive on the beach. We got down there and had a little trouble getting our truck into 4 wheel drive. It finally got into 4 wheel drive and we rolled out onto the beach and it slipped out of 4 wheel drive and we got stuck. We got some people to help us push, me included and got it partially out of the hole but we knew we couldn't push the truck all the way back up the ramp to safety. Someone offered to get a ranger so we waited there for about a half hour until the ranger came. He didn't have a tow and said "legally" he wasn't allowed to help but he would shovel some sand and help push. I said if we were going to push we should do a 3 point turn and back the truck up then push it forward up the ramp.
Yah, that worked!
During our wait we got another call saying there was a sea lion still on the beach but he was way down the other way, definitly not hauling distance with no truck. Anyway, we got into Sand Dollar gated community and still had to walk about a half mile to where the poor little sealo was. We got the net and basically made a hammock for him so we didn't have to carry the carrier all the way down the beach.
Gees, that was fucking tiring! It's hard work rescuing seals.
