I'm havin a great weekend of quiet, contemplative cleaning and other internal domestic chores...
Yesterday, I woke up after a simple Friday night of staying at home and re-organizing the bookshelf. Played a bit of xbox and went to bed clear headed. Saturday morning I woke up to a surprisingly sunny day (it was supposed to rain all weekend) and by noon I was donned in my bike gear for a long trip out to UBC. By the time I was ready to go though, the clouds started to come in. Definately rain.
'eh. whatever' I went out there anyways, but instead of UBC, I ended up riding around through the trails of Stanley Park, totally getting lost on numerous occasions (Oh look, Beaver lake..... AGAIN)
it was much like the Blair Witch Mountain Bike Project. Totally didn't mind though, I was just there to ride, not really to 'get somewhere' so getting lost was actually a bit of a bonus because I got to see the same few serene settings 3 or 4 times.
And, for the first time in 16 years of living here, I saw the totem poles. Gang of Four lyrics playing in my head:
(At home he feels like a tourist)

Well, Saturday was cool. Saturday night was another clean and quiet night like Friday. I wanted to cook something different for myself, so I found a bunch of recipes for gumbo. As usual, completely bastardizing about 4 of them together into my own concoction (totally raising the "I am going to totally fuck this up" potential)

I started the stock at 5:30 pm, thinking I'd be eating by 8 or 9.... HOLY SHIT what a lot of work that is. Totally worth it, and I do say my roux rocked. Dark like chocolate and the aroma of coffee. Well, I finally sat down to eat when it was completed at 1:00am. (The key, I just found, to a really good dark roux for Gumbo, is to fry about 1/2 pound of bacon, and top up the grease to the one cup mark with canola. -- My heart is probably still beating, but only in an attempt to beat me.)

....and this dog day Sunday.... I've been throwing insane amounts of things out, zen-ifying the interior of my space here. If I can't find a home for it (a box FULL of about 20 3 ring binders with various computer documentation ... out ya go!) it went in the bin out back. Didn't even flinch.

I think Morgan is groovin on it as well, as he's been in various states of contentedly chewin on his nylabone, to passing out:

Current soundtrack, Hawksley Workman.
Damn this is a great sounding song. Again I urge EVERYBODY to support this guy.

Tarantulove

You ain't been sexin' kitten,
but now you're screamin',
your bare feet dancin' crazy,
in shards of wine-glasses.
The picture's blurry-blue,
what the hell's got into you?
Tarantulove.

The yellow fringe is frayin',
you pull the top down.
Your clothes cling tightly to your
body when it's rainin'.
I, hungry, smitten, I,
what've you been bitten by?
Tarantulove.
Tarantulove.

Came the times
I want to hold you,
walk the line 'til all
that's feeling sad.

That's feeling sad,
That's feeling sad,
That's feeling sad,
That's feeling sad.

Well, I'm no doctor, baby,
but I know what's good for me.
It's just like chocolate fingers,
on bed-side saucers.
How do you describe the pain?
Here's what I'm prescribin', babe,
Tarantulove.
Tarantulove.
Tarantulove.
Oh, Tarantulove,
Oh, Tarantulove,
Oh, Tarantulove,
Oh, Tarantulove,

Oh, you're blue, blue
when the tide is over,
Tarantulove,
Oh, Tarantulove,
Oh, you're blue, you're blue
blue, blue
Tarantulove,
Tarantulove,
Tarantulove,
Tarantulove,
Oh, Tarantu-rantu-love.
Tarantulove.
Oh,
Tarantulove.

--Hawksley Workman

Plus, with lines like:

"I wound up my watch till I broke the spring,
Now I don't have time for you"

I luuurrrrrrve him.

Don Dixon does a song named "Praying Mantis" - sorta the same themes smile - yaknow, fall in love, get your head bitten off, that kinda stuff smile.

Good deal on the rockin' roux - I don't think I've ever managed that the times I've whipped up a roux wink.

And I've purged most of my stuff too - of course my house is f'n FULL of my wife's crap, but somehow it's all my fault. and No, I'm NOT bitter about it at ALL! wink Before I leave this lovely place I'm gonna have to take pictures, nobody'll believe me! (we've still got wedding presents in their boxes on shelves in the basement - our 13th anniversary (hopefully our last) is in two weeks).
