Wow, this past month has been rather rough. Rough enough, at any rate, that I didn't even really feel like updating this journal. I think I'm just going to vent for venting's sake, so I'm sorry if I come off rambling/incoherent.

1) Honesty. I like to think that people appreciate this. I know I appreciate people being honest with me, so I try to be...

Hello Phoebus,

Hope the hair gel mutiny works out well.
I picked up a really cool book about a week ago. I had gone to the bookstore looking to buy "Greek Gods, Human Lives", but then I saw something else: "Greek Religion", by Walter Burkert.
I don't know how interested you are in the religious views of the Ancients...it is something I find very fascinating.
Evidently this book is considered a classic on the subject, with good reason too.

All right, take it easy

Adios

P.S.
I hope your New Year works out, and I pray you will avoid any and all "work related injuries".

I responded to a couple of your questions in the Abu Ghraib thread. I recommend Seymour Hersh's new book : Chain of Command.
I think it would intrigue you.

Watch out for the smokes - it's a fucker of a habit to kick once you're hooked.

I just returned from Avon Park, Florida, again, having completed this year's competition for our Group. Let me just say that I would much rather bust my ass in the field, running, rucking, jumping, climbing, etc., than being the guy who has to evaluate and grade the competitors. The hours aren't necessarily tougher, and running/evaluating events isn't so stressful a job as to make...

Please add me to the group. Army, Jan 2000 - Jan 2004. (E-4)
Currently finishing B.A., then Army OCS, hopefully.

It sounds like your holiday season has been quite exciting. Good for you.

have you ever considered writing a real blog on geopolitics/military issues? you're an excellent writer with access and insights that the rest of us don't have. or would your current gig preclude doing that?

Well, first things first. I took a bunch of people off of my "Friends" list, and if this includes you, then please don't take it too personally. I just figured that, if we don't interact at all, there's really no point for our respective names to be showing up in our pages.

That having been said...

Sometime tomorrow I'll find out if I can go...

OK, the trip to Florida was different than advertised, but I figured as much when I saw that the tickets getting cut for us were for Orlando. I can't really say I recommend Sebring or Avon Park to anyone interested in more than heavy amounts of drinking at a small number of bars and "nightclubs." On the other hand, if off-key Country Music Karaoke is...

I think the amount of things the game gets right far outweighs the areas in which it falls short.

Does nothing please you?! Seriously though, what would you put in lieu of the Λ and the helmet?

Well, let's see what happened lately:

On the bright side, I found out I'll be gone all next week on a training trip near Panama City, FL. Not bad, considering I'll be collecting about $100-120 a day for per-diem. Making money while getting out of office work is always good. Apparently I'll be "validating" (testing? confused ) our Group's scary new obstacle course (for competitions, etc.),...

Only a minor update...

I got the USB cable I needed for my camera finally! smile

I finally got to download all my pictures unto my computer, and now have two new folders of pics from Greece and Korea. Nothing sensational or crazy, but I think they're nice shots of the places I visited.

Work is really getting to me. I'm a year away from my...

Well, I've been meaning to update my journal for sometime now, but I was hoping to have other than work stuff to post.

Unfortunately, I still can't find a USB cable for my digital camera, so most of the pictures I wanted to upload here remain inaccessible to me. mad

So let's see. What's new?

I was in Savannah for a couple of days during a...

Well, it looks like I'm back in NC for the time being. For at least 3 more months anyways.

Travelling was great, though I'm glad I came back from Korea when I did, as I probably spent a little too much money there on cabs, hotel rooms, partying with old friends, etc.

Right now, the number 2 most frustrating thing is not having a USB...

Have you read Xenophon?

"Anabasis"...the march up-country....

An amazing work by a military historian (and friend of
Socrates) about a mercenary expidition he and 10,000
greeks took into the midsts of Persia....

Curiously enough, it is a story placed in what is now
Iraq.

Strange.

P.S.

Get a Loeb classics edition...it has Ancient Greek on the
left page, and an English translation on the right....

It also contains a description of all the gory details, strategic
decisions, and tactical moves they made.

I think you might like it...I did.

Hey, sorry to everyone on my Friends' List for not saying hi for so long. Things have been craaazy!

The good news? I'm getting a new car when I get back. Apparently, my insurance adjustors figured it'd be easier to call the old one "totaled" as opposed to go through the...

I'm not surprised to hear that you fell victim to "cold stares" but it's good to hear that it wasn't more than that. Your response reinforces something a "world traveller" friend of mine told me last week over the phone from Sicily last week: "most people, wherever you go the world over, and good at heart but still prone to prejudice."
I have a lot of Turkish friends, none of which are in any way racist to Kurds or Americans or anyone. As well as I have a handful of Muslim friends, all of which very much agree that 911 was nothing less than horrendous and are openly disgusted by it.
I haven't been to too many different countries, much less third world countries. I've visited Haiti and Jamaica, but both cater to US citizens in a way. As in, you can go to Haiti and have a good time provided you have a credit card and aren't a total asshole. And most people speak English. But I think that being a visitor in a country like Korea, or say Bangladesh, would be a totally different experience.
I have family from Bangladesh and my father visited there not too long ago. He had an extremely difficult time getting by on his own, what with all of the cultural barriers, but said that most everyone he met was surprisingly friendly and as helpful as possible.
It's good to hear that Korea's youth are acttively involved. I suppose it would be hard not to with Kim around. There's got to be a quicker way to get him out of there besides waiting for him to croak.

Taking this out of the thread -

My point was NOT that our military is full of evildoers. Not at all. Only that we need to remember that war is serious business, that suffering is real. Too many of us, myself and our President included, have no real experience with this kind of horror. I only ask that we remember more than just 9/11. I hate to see 9/11 used as a rallying cry for justice or revenge, when both ideals are never achievable. Solutions can be found, but we need to act rationally. Yes, I believe that war can be fought rationally.

Yeah, I kind of got that impression. I seem to recall agreeing with you on several points before, and at least being able to understand your position other times. I really do appreciate that there is such a wide variety of viewpoints here on SG. It means that one has to really understand their own opinions and be ready and able to back them up with facts, and I think that's always good. To that end, I think it's unfortunate that dkmfc isn't around anymore. I actually liked him because even though we had vastly different opinions on things, his opinions were still backed by facts, he just had different priorities, which I can respect.

Thanks for joining the group. smile

Yes, I'm back--for the time being at least. Just in case anyone was interested, here is the somewhat abridged version of what was to have been a 40-day Odyssey, but was (due to bureaucratic incompetence) reduced to a three week whirlwind tour.

My return from Korea was rather uneventful, shitty flight aside. In all honesty, I should have dropped the extra $700 and flown back...

In about an hour or so, I'll be packing up my PC. I doubt I'll be able to check in for the next week or so, seeing as how I'll be covering about half the length of the planet on a USAF crate.

After that, my contact with all you beautiful people will be infrequent for about 40 incredible days and nights in Europe.
