Those of you who check my journal regularly know that I am currently being audited by the IRS. It has been determined that I owe them $800 in back taxes, plus fees and interest. Now, these unpaid taxes are due to the fact that an employer in 2002 failed to send me a W-2, supposedly due to address changes (strange that my other W-2s found me no problem).

Well, I have decided not to pay the $800, regardless of circumstances and penalties. I find it repulsive that someone who is voluntarily working below the poverty line, in a federal program, for the good of the populace at large was even audited. In the past 4 years, my AmeriCorps service and my current stint working on my Masters in Non-Profit Management, I have made approx. $600 a month (that's what I make currently). Why not tax some rich asshole, why attack the guy who already has to struggle for 3 square meals? I'm truly finished with my term as an American. I am only American because I was born here, something I had no choice in. I can no longer actively support (which I do, through my taxes, etc.) this nation. I am actively seeking to abandon my graduate assistantship (i.e. free master's degree tuiton) in order to expatriate myself. I am preparing a lengthy statement for the IRS, which I also plan to send to a variety of other media outlets.

This is what it's come to. Understand this if nothing else. American politics has driven someone who voluntarily accepted a life of poverty and service, in the hopes of bettering our country, to seeking asylum in foreign lands. I *hate* my country, that's what this is saying. If I paid the $800 I owe, what would it go to? Another couple crates of ammo for the war. Fuck no. Fuck you Mr. Bush, fuck you. I am quite finished here/

Don't they audit people at random? You're not being made an example of, it's just what they do.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but it's hard to fight the government. If you try and fight it, you're probably going to look at some extra fines/fees and maybe some jail time if you end up telling them to go to hell and not pay at all.

Is it fair? No.
Do a ton of people get away with cheating on their taxes every year? Yes.

It's just the luck of the draw.

Do what you can, dude. Hope you have a lawyer friend or family member.

Or you could wait it out. It's an election year. Before you expatriate yourself, write a nice letter to the local chapter of the ACLU. They LOOOVE to take on the IRS. I know of several people who successfully sued the IRS. Of course, they were being penalized for subsationally more than $800, but the point is they WON. It can be done. The IRS is not infallible. You should be allowed to state your case. Seriously, talk to the ACLU. They can at least reccommend the proper course of action given your situation.
