So, new here. Maybe I'll talk a bit.
I'm a music fan. I like a lot of different genres, but mainly towards the metal end. I like rock, and I like certain types of "pop" music - stuff that's not actually "pop"ular if you get my drift. It doesn't always fit the mold of what marketing companies know how to sell...

Anyway, one of the things that I find very interesting is the way music fans act regarding their favourite music, and Metal Fans are one of the worst offenders.
So just what am I getting at?
I'm talking about the cliques in metal fans. I think it is the epitome of irony that kids who grew up being (generally) outcast from the regular kids at school for their taste in music, will treat other metal fans the same way if the sub-genre of metal you like meets their disapproval.
For example, a new genre emerges, like metalcore, deathcore, or even from my generation nu-metal. Bands get a fanbase going and people really start to enjoy it, but then the fucking bigotry starts. It's not cool to like breakdowns. Its not cool to like death metal vocals. It's not cool to like anything except what's gone before.
I have to ask these people - what the fuck does it matter what's cool? If cool was your thing, then what the fuck are you doing being a metal fan in the first place.
Enjoying metal is all about what you think of the music, not what others think of it. Coolness is based on what others think of something. It's not an intrinsic quality, it's a quality determined by the collective. This is not what metal is supposed to be about.
When I was growing up in the 80s, there was a term used to describe someone into something because of what other people liked. This term was reserved for those who truly deserved to be put in their place; to go fuck themselves. If anyone had ever thought of me this way, I'd have lost my shit.
That term is poser.
A poser is someone who's interest in something is totally manufactured, trying to fit in with others, and doing things that they have no real interest in, just to impress. This, in my opinion, is the lowest type of social animal.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not calling my fellow metal fans posers. But seriously, where's the fucking judgement coming from. If you like a band for what others think, you are a poser. If you put shit on a band or their fans because of what you've read or heard from others, you are a hypocrite.
I understand the pride people have in the music they like, and when they hear a band they don't like, fine, your opinion is valid. But that should be the end of it. Once you start having a go at people for liking the music you don't like, you are justifying all the cockheads you've dealt with all your life who give you shit for liking metal.

The only band from the era that I personally don't like is Bon Jovi - I know it's popular, but it doesn't really do much for me (except one or two songs from the Young Guns sequel).
The point is, I'm not gonna look down on someone for liking Bon Jovi - everyone has their favourites, and I'm not going to make someone feel bad for liking something I don't.
people used to dis me cause i still like gunsnroses, i say fuck em and rock on
