Transitions and Transmissions: 2010 in Review
I learned a lot about myself and what I'm capable of in a year that took so much from me with the passing of my uncle. I also said finally said goodbye to the women who stole my heart years ago. I need to build me a new heart now.
I worked my ass off to win a position in an office I have worked contract in for 2 years, only to be offered another position that offers me much more opportunity and growth. It will require much more resolve and strength if I am to weather the stresses that come along with helping, and being unable to help the poorest people in the province. Today I said goodbye to some wonderful people and an office I will miss dearly.
At the outset of the year I finally broke a long term of no contact with a women who captured my heart years ago and inspired me to be so much more than I felt I was when I met her years ago. We had a brief and wonderful reunion but in the end, I finally gave in to the reality that we just don't fit each other the way we want to and I said goodbye. I wish her nothing but the best and I hold hope that I can find that someone who will mesh with me on all the levels her and I did and more.
I am lucky enough to be able to recognize, now, in hindsight, all the wonderful ways my Uncle Brian enriched and enhanced my enjoyment of life by exposing me to music and culture. Ironically, one of his greatest gifts is that in his death, he hammered home the message that while we can't always know or choose the time we leave this life, we certainly can choose to make ourselves healthier and happier and that pain and anger should never be held onto.
2011 is the year I begin to heal myself mentally and physically. I owe it to my uncle, if not myself, to live a long and fruitful life. I wish the same for all of you and hope you find muse and inspiration in everything you do as we all circle around the sun one more time.
My Record of the Year?
I also really, really loved The Suburbs. If your close to my age and grew up in the burbs, you will relate but even if you didn't, there is something everyone can relate to in this conceptually solid and deftly executed arrangement of songs about the promise and hopes of our parents in the past and the realization it was so much facade and farce and that we need to build our own dreams for the future. It's all about transitioning from childhood to adulthood and it has some of the most wonderful lyrics and music I've ever heard.
An obvious choice? Sure, but it's hard to argue.
A close runner up, Mux Mool's first full length "Skulltaste" has something for everyone and it seems adaptable to many moods. Like Sifu Lee was so fond of saying, "Be like Water" and Mux Mool flows. I listened to this album a lot and recommended it a lot. It's blippy, trippy fun! There was a lot of great instumentals this year, El-P, Block Head, Bonobo, Flying Lotus, but this was my early favorite.
I also loved offerings from Seu Jorge Budos Band, Hot Chip, Grinderman, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, The Roots, El Guincho, The Dead Weather and so many, many more! If anything, 2010 showed anything is possible in music and that talent is everywhere!
Special mention goes out to my friend DRLCTS who released their first full length, and SGBC's own DannyDiggs! who seems to be making beats for so many people, I can't keep up! Danny, send me a list so I can get it all!
On that note, I'll shut up and make a final wish which is that I hope I can get to meet more of you people in the future!
All the best (you deserve it!)
