For a lot of situations a golden rule. For matters of the heart, it’s very much the reverse of course. However in a situation that can be dangerous, it’s the only rule to go by. Something I wish a colleague at work had been aware of. I’ll set the scene, a few colleagues spot four customers who were looking like they were going to leave without paying. Instead of doing the smart thing and calling it in, using the headsets most of them were wearing, one of them goes outside and challenges them. The first I hear of it as Duty Manager is to come to the shopfront because in their words, he has been assaulted. Get down there and he is bleeding from his head after they threw a bottle at him. Damn fool really. I can only imagine the red mist descended, he has always taken shoplifting very personally and after ignoring all company policy he ended up getting hurt. Had he just thought none of this might have happened.
