umm, regarding belle & sebastian, I have found that not everyone likes them for the same reasons as me, and as a result, people have different faves. With that said in mind, I unequivocally prefer the earlier work to that of the later. My super most favorite is still "if your feeling sinister", their first domestic release. I also really like their first 4 eps, 3 of which have been complied into a set by Matador entitled "Lazy Line Painter Jane". Those are my faves. The reason being, that these records all contain work primarily written by Stuart Murdoch (singer). After "sinister", he started treating the band as more of a democracy, allowing other members to contribute songs. Additionally, more musicians joined the band. I initially liked B&S, as they are affectionately known, because of Stuart's songwriting. I still like the more recent work, but I think these albums can be just a bit uneven. Whereas, ther ois not a bad song on "sinister". Is that enough for you? I can just give a simple answer to anything. Sorry.
