DAMN THE MAN!
A little kid wanted to buy some candy at work today. No more than 4-years old, she looked up and over the counter with eyes fearful of a stranger in a way only a child could possess. (Or a heroin addict) The mother was handing me a dollar as she coached her daughter to hand me the candy bar to scan in.
"Give it to the man, sweetie. We have to pay the man," she said.
We have to pay the man?
It got me thinking: listen the next time you see a child in a store with their parent or legal guardian. Every male adult around them is "The Man". And "The Man" always needs to be paid.
-"We need to pay The Man."
-"Give that to The Man."
-"No, you can't buy that knife. Give it back to The Man."
From a young age, children are taught, NAY!, conditioned, to fear and respect "The Man." I believe that the disillusionment of an entire generation is being passed onto their children through subliminal conditioning to bow down to and serve "The Man."
Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines "The Man" as "the personification of the corporate conglomerate (Is this spelled right? I don't know, I don't have a dictionary) bent on making the common working American his/her bitch."
So to all those with children, I urge you to stop referring to any adult figure as "The Man." Don't allow them to break their own wills and spirits in a bid to suckle from the sweet teat of corporate America at minimum wage plus tips. From now on, refer to all male adults in the vicinity of your children as "That Dirty Bastard Who Knocked Me Up And Spawned You."

This short essay of mine brought to you by my passion to be David Sedaris. Only Straight. And with a voice that doesn't sound like a heliumed-up Muppet.
