news:

i will get the definitive answer 29 Dec on whether i'll be headed to Iraq. also, the deployment date has been moved up to 10 Jan. so, if i do go, it'll be sooner than anticipated.

it all hinges on whether the other guy i'm to sub for is cleared by his doctor to go after just having minor back surgery. i wasn't aware before how reticent the doctor was to do that until i talked to the guy today by phone, which is when i found out about the dates begin moved up.

i want to go. maybe i can do some small bit of good to make a really fucked up situation a little better. i'm not amounting to much here other than being a good consumer and space taker-upper.

i sent a few bags of candy to my cousin who is with the Marines near Falujah. he passes it out to the Iraqi kids. the pictures make me sad.

-----------------------------------

when i buy special edition dvds (such as the 'return of the king' set purchased today as an xmas gift to me) it is for the added scenes deleted from the theatrical film. i want to see more of the story, witness the imperfections in pacing or see a different view or side of a character. seeing these bits of the cutting room floor sort of takes the movie from an established linear progression of events and gives a bit more weight or dimension, as if its saying 'these things could have happened, but didn't.' it's another part of the story, it is within the realm of the story and thus, to me, essential.

similarly, but handled in an altogether different way, i avoid the 'making of' and actor interview and commentary bits like the plague. i don't want to know how it was made. the movie for me is a piece of art, a bit of fantasy or break from reality which exists independently of its mundane fundamentals. for me it destroys the illusion that i'm so adept at losing myself in. in my extremely fertile and trained imagination i've unconsciously filled in the gaps, making the leap of the only faith i believe in straight into whatever world is flickering in cathode ray blue on the screen. the same could be said about the way i view other aspects of my reality.

enh. I hope you don't have to go. It's just colder than fuck out here right now and unpleasant.

I like the actor's commentary in some movies. if it's them sitting around just talking about the movie.
the one from Fight Club was pretty good. it just annoys me when they spend 5 minutes kissing up to the director or crew.

take it easy.
