Warning copious amounts of pictures in the following journal entry!

Asheville has many festivals. Bele Chere is probably the most known festival in Asheville. Bele Chere however no longer really represents the artists of Asheville, these days it's more geared to cash in on a bastardized version Asheville's "Alternative" image and pawn it off as the real thing to tourists who flock in from surrounding states. If you really want a feel for Asheville's eclectic arts scene, you need to visit one of our other festivals. The most promising is our Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF) which was held last Sunday. I think it lets you in on more of a slice of the alternative side of Asheville than any other festival. It's for Asheville residents by Asheville residents. It's a one day event where local artisans come together all along Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville, and simmer in a kind of funky Bouillabaisse of strictly homegrown food, beer, music, art, and performance. I think it captures the spirit of what Bele Chere started out doing thirty years ago. It's definitely a fun time.
Here are some pictures of LAAFF:

Hu-Nab Krue B-Boys out in full force

Patchouli scented Sitar playing hippies also out in full force.

In fact almost any type of person out in full force.

Ginormous puppets.

Golden girl human statue.

One of the freaky grey women. (There was a drum circle and these women in grey paint slithered through the crowd and preceded to go into a spasm-like dance on the ground. It was freaky.)

Chalk Diego. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Funky Car 1

Funky Car 2

Children painting Funky Car 3

Art while you wait.

Bicycle Joust. ( I wanted to participate, but I missed the sign ups. mad )

Fire dancing!

More Fire dancing! eeek

So after enjoying the festival, some friends and I (yes I have other friends, I just never have any pictures of them.) Had a some delicious crpes at Cafe Soleil and smoked some raspberry-vanilla concoction out of a Hookah at Hookah Joe's, a hookah bar downtown. It was a fun day.

Well I'm like 90% moved into my new apartment. The last thing to go will be the 'puter, so I could be AWOL for a couple of days. I might have to sneak into one of the computer labs at UNCA and update from there. Have a groovy week.

i'm really sad I didn't get to go this year. Julie and the kids were out there. I told her to look out for you but I guess you two never ran into each other.

I'm glad u posted pics kinda makes me feel like I was there. Well not really but it's really nice to see what was going on.

How are you liking the new place so far?
