So auditions for Debbie Does Dallas begin tomorrow, and I'm nervous as hell. You see I'm directing this extravaganza, so I'm totally responsible for how it turns out. I'm worried I don't have enough creativity or vision. I'm scarred that I won't get the right people, or that I might cast the wrong people. It's going to be interesting to see who shows up to the auditions. I hope I get serious people and not pervs looking for some action. Well if they are perverts, I hope I can tell. Im also worried that I cant attain the vision I have for it, or that it might come off as unprofessional. Despite the subject matter this is an earnest show. It played off-Broadway for several months.
I've directed two other shows. One was SubUrbia by Eric Bogosian and the other was Love's Labour's Lost by Shakespeare. They both turned out well, but not without problems or setbacks. Its no fun having to replace actors last minute, or when a particular scene isnt working, or you cant find a prop you need. I just hope this will be relatively problem-free. Another thing is that this will be the first Musical I've directed, and that brings a whole other boatload of problems: finding good singers, finding a musical director, devising choreography, it's scary.
For your further edification, the story is basically the one from the porno film, with almost the exact dialogue, however all the sex scenes are replaced with song and dance numbers. I know a porno without sex, what fun is that? But it is really funny clever and provocative in a burlesque kind of way. The fun of it is finding ways to represent the sex without showing it. Actually there isn't even any nudity in it.
I just hope it isn't a massive trainwreck.
I'm sure it will be the subject of much of my future stress and many upcoming journals.
Wish me luck.
The biggest theatrical event yet in 2005.
