"Change it because I am the Director," is not collaboration.
I lost it with the director of A Christmas Carol this weekend, because after the opening show she tells me to change a bunch of cues, because she didn't like the way that they looked. She has been doing this show for thirty years and she doesn't like anything different. It would have been one thing if this had happened during rehearsals, but this was the day after we opened. Everyone else involved in the show said the lights looked fine. The director didn't like them though. In a professional situation she would have been out of luck. After the show has opened it is out of the designers hands. I tried to explain to her why certain cues looked a certain way; to enhance mood, or to highlight important action. She wouldn't listen. She made me sit down, go through each cue, and change what she didn't like about it. Yeah I changed them, but I don't know how it happened, somehow I forgot to save the changes. Hmmmmmmmm. Darn technology! Well it was only three shows anyway. She didn't really say anything else about it. I think she was too busy taking costume notes. Damn, I respect this woman, but she should really stop directing.
