The first time I ever spoke to Amanda's parents was a harrowing (if complicated) experience. We were both in college and had been dating for a few months so her folks had heard of me, but that was about it. She would always call them on Fridays (I think) at some specific time, just to check in. Well, she had come down with a horrible case of laryngitis and couldn't hardly whisper, let alone talk.
I had taken her to the ER and got her drugs, and was playing nursemaid to her. She was staying in my apartment for the duration since her roommate insisted on leaving windows open despite the fact it was in the teens outside! (Oddly, she just never quite moved out... ).
Somehow when Friday came along, she managed to convince me that I had to call her parents so they wouldn't worry. Yeah, right.
"Hi. You don't know me, but I'm your daughter's boyfriend. She can't talk because she's sick, but don't worry because I'm looking after her."
Somehow they accepted me anyway. LOL

This weekend I went to some workshops for my major. I had to be completely silent for 26 hours! No one was allowed to talk, but we could sign so it really wasn't that bad.
