Yesterday, President Bush caved to the demands of the far right and nominated anti-choice Samuel Alito to replace moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

Alito's record on choice
Alito's record shows that he would not only vote in favor of laws that make it more difficult for women to access abortion care - he would likely vote to overturn Roe v. Wade altogether. As a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Alito argued that significant restrictions on abortion are constitutional. He even voted to uphold a government requirement that women notify their spouses before choosing abortion, a provision that O'Connor opposed.

What the right wing has to say
It should be no surprise that anti-choice interest groups are falling all over themselves to support President Bush's latest pick. Right-wing groups are quickly going on record aligning Alito with the two most conservative Supreme Court Justices -Scalia and Thomas - both of whom have voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Operation Rescue: "We are trusting that we are now on the fast-track to derailing Roe v. Wade as the law of the land." (Operation Rescue press release, 10/31/05)
Coalition for a Fair Judiciary: "The president has made an excellent choice today which reflects his commitment to appoint judges in the mold of (Antonin) Scalia and (Clarence) Thomas." (Associated Press, 10/31/05)
American Center for Law and Justice: "President Bush has fulfilled what he said he would do, which is nominate conservative justices in the mold of Scalia and Thomas." (Bloomberg.com, 11/1/05)

What you can do
We need you to oppose Samuel Alito's confirmation! Start by sending an email to your U.S. senators. Please personalize your message by saying why you think another anti-choice Justice would be bad for the Supreme Court and jeopardize a woman's right to choose.
