Yesterday I talked to a few of my friends about the election. Ok for the most part I ranted, I can admit that. I was most disturbed when I discovered that most of my friends didn't vote...actually all but three of us didn't. I asked them why and here are the main two answers I got:
1.) "Why it's not like it's going to make a difference..."
2.) "People kept asking me if and when I was going to vote so I I didn't because they annoyed me!"
This got me thinking and suddenly I imagined thousands of other people just like them echoing their words. Then I went further to think about how if they had gotten off their apathetic asses MAYBE things would be different. Why? Because the computer and their social life meant more to them!!!!! I thought about all those people before them that left their countries of origin just to have what we earn by birth. I think about all the history that surrounds our rights. All these things began to play over and over in my mind until I was completely annoyed.
I was always told that as a citizen this is one of the few things you must do to give back to your country. To let your voice be heard with the voices of others. That if you didn't act out and speak then you have no right to complain about the way things are run around here. Patriotism isn't something you do simply when our country and way of life is in jeopardy. It's something that you keep inside. It's what you believe can become of your country.
For all of you who were too busy or indifferent to vote you will be proud to know that you are amongst the ranks of greats....like that moron Paris Hilton and 50 Cent the bullet sponge!
That's my rant for the day....
