Well, this has been a year I will never forget, but may try really hard to.
Just after Thanksgiving, my partner became ill. I took her to the emergency room after about an hour of trying to convince her it wasn't just the stomach bug going around. And it turned out I was right: she had pancreatitis. Which became necrotizing pancreatitis. Which became a week in the ICU and three weeks total in hospital.
She's home now. I'm acting as her charge nurse while trying to work from home, If it weren't for her health insurance through her job, we would owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. As a "freelancer" (full-time for one client) who depends on her for my health insurance because my employer doesn't like paying for benefits, the whole episode has just shown how tenuous our financial stability is. It also scared the shit out of me ; necrotizing pancreatitis has a mortality rate of more than 50 percent usually when it becomes septic it's 80%.
The holidays are going to be subdued this year. She's weeks away from going back to work, and needs help up and down stairs. My mother arrived to help, but she's not exactly getting around well herself.
But I'm just glad we're having the holidays at all.
