The two film versions of La Bte humaine that I have seen are both a little disappointing. I mean, they are interesting, but don't attain the same degree of madness as the Zola novel. They are:
La Bte humaine (Jean Renoir, France, 1938)
and
Human Desire (Fritz Lang, USA, 1954)
Recently there was an adaptation of La Terre called This Filthy Earth (Andrew Kotting, UK, 2001) that really was in the spirit of Zola: it was absolutely disgusting!!

I have taught the novel and its film adaptations, and the films have to leave a lot out cos they just wouldn't get away with showing it.
