So, I was thinking....yes, I know I shouldn't do that, xador, but still; I think I should get a tattoo. I've always wanted one, it's just I've never really tried to find something that suited me. The other problem is the artistry side of the decision. I would want something very particular. So, what I am getting at is tattoo parlor etiquitte. If I got into a shop, would it be unusual to ask to see some kind of work history including sketches? puke Shit...I am sorry for vomiting.

Org,
Most decent tattoo artists will have a portfolio of some of their previous work, so can you can get an idea of their level of skill and the styles they are best at. They often use these portfolios as "flash" that future customers can choose designs from too, and most will also welcome your own ideas for what you want, I mean it is YOUR skin. Some artists are particularly well known for a specific style, like Guy Aitchinson in Chicago's stuff often has this gorgeous, almost fractal appearance; while my ex, Tim Kern, who works with Paul Booth at Last Rites in New York, even though he often prefers "dark" subject matter, with his incredible talent he can render basically anthything you want, and he is VERY good about sanitation. Always nsist on a high level of sanitation from your tatto artist, including autoclaved needles and lots of fresh rubber gloves. No alcohol or aspirin beforehand, as it can make the blood too thin for the artist to work well.
Good Luck,
Lacey
