good for you with the guitar,
I tried and gave up on it last winter.
people kept telling me about 'bar chords'
like its faster if you can pick them up but....?

My tip is to find something you'd love to be able to play and then find either the sheet music (if you can read it) or someone who can show you how to play it. Pick something that will be rewarding when you're done learning it-- Smoke on the Water is nice and easy, but who still listens to Deep Purple, really?
