So I've been working at my in-store bakery for about a month and a half - and I think I've come along very well for someone who came in with zero experience. I don't get to do too many exciting/different/original things like my mom. But I have been sneaking my phone in so I could take a few pictures of the things I have been doing.

Here we go:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

This is a design supposed to be done on a 1/2 sheet cake. The customer wanted a double round so I had to improvise, and then I forgot to leave room for the writing. Luckily we have ways of fixing that kind of mistake that does not involve scraping down the cake.

I'm sure other people have done this, but this is something I came up with on my own. We have this clear vanilla gel we color and use to decorate. I decided to grab a little bag and leave it clear and add little water droplets to some roses. I think it makes the roses look a little more real - and it really does look like water. I had one customer pull one of these out of the display and went "wait, water dripped on it" like he thought our cooler was leaking. I explained that it was a vanilla gel and he was a little embarrassed.

Roses were really tough for me in the beginning because I just couldn't figure out how to work with really soft frosting. Every time I'd start to build up a rose it would just go 'bleeeeh, I dun wanna..." and would droop slowly into just a blob. Now they're a lot better, and though I can't do them in 1/2 a second like the other decorators, mine look real and are of better quality in my opinion.

I've done a lot of cakes like this; where the customer has twins or two kids with the same birthday. Usually I'll actually add the designs and sort of morph them into one another but this customer requested I just add a border, add the toys, and leave the cake white. Boring. So I split the border and added ribbon. Muwhahahaha!

If you'll look closely, you can see I had to smoosh a bunch of individual cupcakes together and frost the tops to decorate this like a cake. I hate doing this.
