Oh bother....Last week we found a spot on the carpet which was bubbled upward and made a squishy sound when stepped on. So I called the apartment manager and told her that there was a problem. So one of the maintenance people comes and looks around. She pulls up the carpet and the parquet floor underneath is all waterlogged. So then she leaves and says she has to talk to her boss to see what to do. That's fine and dandy and I figure I'm going to be going to Philly (again) for the weekend since my Grandmother was reading the haftorah for the first time in her life for her 80th birthday. It was a big family event and it went pretty well. Back to the point I assumed that I would be away for the weekend and they would have time to fix the problem while I was gone and so when I came back everything would be just dandy.
So we came back Sunday afternoon having stayed in my parents's guest room (on an oh so comfy sleeper sofa) to find that half of our bedroom closet was on our bed and the floor was ripped up and there was a big fan going to dry it out. The linnen closet had also been emptied and the shelves ripped out. There were holes cut in the walls and ceilings covered with trash bags.
Since the note they let us didn't explain anything I called the office and left a message (it's closed on Sundays and I wasn't sure this qualified as an emergency). A little later on the head maintence guy came around and takes a look and says that they found the leak and patched it and they can take the fan out since it looks like everything is dry now. Sounds like everything is groovy now, just have to patch up the holes and put the shelves back together and fix the floor. No, that would be too easy, because as he's standing there packing up the fan he says "I hear a drip". Next thing I know he's cutting more holes in the walls. Finally he says the he's found the leaks and he'll have plumbers in to replace the pipes on Monday or Tuesday. He continues on to tell me how lucky I am that they could find the leak because sometimes they can't find the leak. I don't consider any of this to be lucky since it's my bedroom that's torn apart and if they couldn't figure out where the leak was the apartment complex would be giving me a new apartment. Meanwhile, all our clothes are on our bed and there are holes in our walls. So we decide to go camp out in the living room on our (oh so comfortable) sofa bed, our one bedroom having essentially turned into an efficiency. So Monday goes by with no Plumbers and the place is a wreck but there's not much to be done since most of my closets are unusable. I spent most of the day outside walking the dog since it was actually warm and sunny.
Then this morning the plumbers show up. I roll out of bed throw some clothes on and let them in. They let me know that they will probably have to cut more holes and so I should get the rest of my stuff that had been in the other half of the closet out of the closet. Now they have been making all kinds of noises back there and lots of dripping water and splashes and they keep going in and out and it's cold and snowy and blustery and my dog doesn't even want to be outside. But hopefully it will all be over soon. Meanwhile I should really get back to my job search since this being unemplyed this has lost it's charm.
