i have tried to pick out the exact moment in my mind when it truly became one of the greatest stories ever told, and to me this is it...
Obi-Wan: "I have somthing here for you... your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it, he feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn idealistic crusade like your father did."
Luke: "What is it?"
Obi-Wan: "It's your father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight, not as clumsy or random as a blaster, an elegant weapon for a more civilized day. For over a thousand gnerations the Jedi Knights were the gaurdians of piece and justice in the Old Repubilc, before the dark times, before the Empire."
Luke: "How did my father die?"
Obi-Wan: "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine untill he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father, now the jedi are all but extinct... Vader was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force."
Luke: "The Force?"
Obi-Wan: "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power, its an energy field created by all living things, it surrounds us, and penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together..."

and thus truly begins one of the greatest sagas of our lifetimes, when things were so much simpler and the force was just an energy field.
