Last week was the 8 year anniversary of the death of my best friend from college, Meredith. It's always a weird day for me, but I try to do something special to mark the occasion in a good way, rather than a sad one.

Meredith was in New Zealand when she died, and her description of that place clung to me in this way that I could not let go. I moved there for a while after I graduated college. While I was living in Wellington, I had a 45-minute commute from the city to Lower Hutt where the film studios were located. I listened to a lot of radio, and I kept hearing this song.

It was Brooke Fraser singing Saving the World. The song reminded me so much of Meredith.

This year, magically, kismet happened: Brooke Fraser came to Portland. She played on Mer's anniversary. I don't really believe in ghosts or gods or anything like that. But sometimes the universe seems to pull forces together and make something nice happen just when you need it.

I managed to find myself right alongside the stage, close enough to spread my lenses out at the edge of the stage and take some really nice photos of a really amazing concert.

So in the grand tradition that Meredith proposed, rather than crying over her, I spent some time with food, music....and as Brooke Fraser put it, a little bit of bopping.

Thanks for your thoughts. I guess there aren't any easy answers...but it wouldn't be worthwhile if it were easy, I suppose. I've been taking a wee break from photography...as usually happens in winter, ha...and it's been nice to gain a bit of perspective. In the meantime, I've been finding myself writing, instead. So apparently, something in my brain needs to create something all the time...ha.
