Metallica. Oh, sweet Metallica. You were my 'favorite' band for many many many years. You taught me all about riffing on guitar. You were my life, for many years. Then came St. Anger. I'm sorry....I tried, I did try my best. I listened....FORCED myself to listen...and just didn't get it. I stuck with you through Load and Reload...which I happen to think are two amazing albums, and are actually the ones I listen to the most nowadays. But St Anger was just....garbage.

I'm sorry for leaving. I still hate that cd, and will always pretend it didn't exist...but I know that you are now back in true form. If anything, maybe better than I'd ever seen you. Last night's show, was proof of that.

Luck is not something I believe in, my chance was in my favor. It started with getting floor tickets two days before the show. Then Gina taking the day off, so we could leave early (and avoid the 30-90 minute line waits outside the venue). Then we somehow managed to not only get a close spot on the floor even though we didn't try to do that until halfway through LOG's set, but we ended up getting on the railing. Then, we got a ball (ill explain later). We lost it, but then ended up getting a bigger ball. Everything just worked out!

Gojira I did not watch, the first song sounded horrible so we didn't bother. I'm not a fan of Lamb of God, but they played well. We stood right behind Chris Adler (he was on a riser in one of the corners of the stage), so it was cool to watch him play as they did their set.

Metallica was....wow. Best peformance I've seen out of them. James' voice was spot on...as was Lar's performance. I've never thought of him as a great drummer. Good, and he fits the music...but until last night, seeing him smash the fuck out of his kit with a precise fury I'd never seen from him, that I thought "wow what a fucking badass drummer." His kit sounded great too, i could hear the snare and toms from where I was (the natural sound vs PA), and it was nice. Kirk and Rob I couldn't hear much unfortunately, but they looked into it. James himself looked way healthier and happier than I'd ever seen him, and his frequent 'love life' messages during stage banter reflected a new Hetfield.

Song selection was nice and varied. Shortest Straw was a nice surprise, as was No Leaf Clover. I also thoroughly enjoyed Master Of Puppets, Damage Inc, Enter Sandman (which is funny, because I HATE that song), and Motorbreath. We also got the first playing of "Killing Time" in many years.

The lighting was great...they used lasers very effectively in a few parts. Of course, there was pyro. What's a Metallica show without pyro. Stage was very stripped down and simple, but it worked. It shows how much they love their fans, for having that "concert in the round" type stage. It means the entire audience gets a closer look, not just those fortunate few in the front. i wish more bands would do that....it just makes so much more sense.

During the last song, they dropped 200-300 black beach balls of various sizes that said METALLICA on them, onto the stage and floor audience. They were EVERYWHERE! It felt like Blue Man Group or Cirque Du Soleil. We got a small ball, but I dropped it by mistake as I was trying to stop some jackass from hurting a girl. Me and Gina were yelling at the security guy to give us our ball back, and the stupid fuck throws it out into the audience!! Then he goes "oh that was yours?" He redeemed himself later, when a larger ball fell, and we both go "YOU BETTER GIVE US THAT DAMNED BALL" haha and he obliged.

All in all, a fucking fantastic grow, with amazing friends and music and just....great. The 15 year old in me definitely came out to play last night.

P.S. i hate cameraphones but it's all I had on me!

your cameraphone takes some decent photos considering the lighting

so you took the ball home with you?
