I bought a sculpture in Vancouver that I've had for 3 1/2 half months now, and I just had an idea of why I like it. Youve got a very physical white bear, a polar bear probably, and hes got a dream of some sort in his mouth. The green salmon between his teeth. And hes not killing it. Hes simply got hold of it. And that moment is frozen in sculpture. The bear is an opaque white material that carries off the illusion of being faceted like a crystal, slighlty sparkly anyways, and the fish is made of green jade. The bear has no eyes. How did he obtain the fish? Hes moving fowards, apparently slowly. And thus the fish is moving forwards also, probably being rocked side to side a little bit and hurting. But the fish is used to swimming within the grasp of water, so being held within the jaws of the bear is not so different for it. The jade fish and the white bear combination, the raw physicality and the artistic motivation, each is present in the eternal moment of the sculpture. The fish is unbreakable and smooth, the bear is dull white, theres a visual quality of softness that the bear has due to is simple curves. When the moment ends, well the moment doesnt end. Thats the interesting quality of a sculpture. There it is the following morning, solid as the floor. The fish is never eaten, never consumed. It is accidentally a metaphor for several things, or for all things if one has a need to figure out why. Maybe Ive got it backwards. Maybe the bear is the dreamer. Maybe the bear is the earth in its dream-time state (thus without eyes), and everything alive in the world is the fish. And its never letting go. And thats eternity. And when its had its terrible way with us, carried us off to some spot, it will just eat us up, and then well return to where we started, a part of that ruthless polar bear. But for now, like in the sculpture, were alone with polar bear earth. The bear that survives amidst the freezing cold of outer space due to its furry atmosphere.
