Ode to graphic novels

I wonder about the dark, fecund, unmoving
Eternities in picture books.
I am suspicious,

Yet hopeful, interested, and curious.
Like a battered wife. Maybe itll turn out nice
But it never does.

As the faeries used to say, whispering nonsense
To those who would otherwise tread roughly on their
Unprotected homes.

Doors that unlock
And open up
Are not usually noticed
Floating upright
On such immaculate ocean waves

And windows that offer views
Of ancient cityscapes
Are rarely seen
Hovering lightly
Over fields of sugar cane.
