I think Mindy Smiths version of Jolene works as a song because the singer builds up the Jolene character so well, telling her how shes like the risen sun and unbelievable, and its like she loves all these characteristics that Jolene has, and respects her for being amazing and powerful, and is perhaps in love with her, but she doesnt want Jolene to take away her man. She wants the relationship she has with an ordinary man to be respected. (A man that even though hes sort of loveable, is ultimately nothing special, and clearly not as amazing as Jolene). So she calls on the goddess of a woman, Jolene, to hear her devotions, and to respect her relationship enough to move on to some other man in some other town. And if Jolene doesnt back down. The singer character will fight, and die, and be broken into dust, rather than sit idly by while her husband is stolen away. Theres something brave about the vibrato, or the way she says Jolene. I get the sense that yes, shes begging now, and she appears to have no shame, but if Jolene decides against her, on her knees is not where she will stay.
