Sometimes you don't notice something until it's explicitly pointed out to you. With this employee of mine, it wasn't until my sister pointed out how miserable I've been in the last few months compared to this time last year. My sister pointed out the negativity that radiates from this employee and how that influences everyone around her. This is on top of her making more mistakes in the last couple of months. Frustration + negativity = very depressed, slightly suicidal me.
When I found out that she had put in her two weeks notice I felt an immense weight come off my shoulders. Sure, I'll have to endure the next two weeks, but then she's gone. I know she's trying to pick a fight with me since the owner (me mother, it's a family business) is off on a two week road trip. I guess she figures if I tell her to leave then she can earn unemployment pay. Except I would have to fire her without cause and there's enough cause for me to base it on. I've fired someone before and while it was a terrifying experience I made it through. They tried filing for unemployment but since the situation warranted firing, they never got it. For anyone wanting to start a business know that firing someone is a difficult but necessary thing to do. Whether they're a friend, family member or long-time employee, if their continued employment hurts your business then they have to go.
Still, two weeks of her being around and antagonizing me. Of course I can't say anything, right up until I have to say something. Sounds strange how that works, I know. But if I let her get to me then she wins. I'd rather not let that happen.
