Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes (1994)

More than a decade after first buying it this album still blows me away. At the time I had not heard anything quite like it. An epic blend of progressive doom/death metal with lush keyboards, mid-paced rhythms, and soaring guitar melodies. Vocals are a weak point here, Tomi Koivusaari is neither a great clean singer nor an especially strong growler (he would later step down from vocal duties to focus purely on guitar, and letting the band add a stronger vocalist), but that doesn't really detract from the album as a whole. Lyrics are lifted from the Finnish folk epic, the Kalevala, and provide a glimpse into the folk culture of the band's home country. Relapse Records reissued this album a few years ago with three tracks from the Black Winter Day ep included. Unfortunately the reissue also included the band's joke cover of The Doors' 'Light My Fire' as a hidden track. The Doors cover is only amusing for about 10 seconds, and kinda kills the atmosphere of the album. Luckily they were smart enough to put in last on the track order so you can just program it out or simply hit the stop button after track 13. Album highlights are 'The Castaway', 'Black Winter Day', 'Forgotten Sunrise', and 'North's Son'. Unfortunately Amorphis would go on to transform into a watered-down psudeo prog-rock band, however with Tales... they crafted something brilliant and unique that still stands as one of the best metal albums of it's decade.
