Thank God for liberal California healthcare regulations. A friend of mine has some crazy swelling in the left front lobe of his brain. He has no health insurance of his own, being a career chef who has always worked in independent restaurants, but he has lived with his girlfriend for a while, and her health insurance carrier lets her claim him as a domestic partner, so he is actually able to go to the doctors and get the help he needs without going into amazing debt that he would never get out of on his own.

The downside, obviously, is that he has this crazy swelling in the left front lobe of his brain, and even though he is getting treatment, it is very dangerous and could all go tits-up at any second, through some kind of massive aneurysm or something.
