"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside… I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles".

(Anne Frank)

And also a beautiful article on the benefits of outdoors activities. Here.

I like the idea of that.  I have heard and read about a few places like that around the USA, often mixing not only writers but painters, sculptures, actors, musicians, etc.  Basically anyone who has a desire to explore the creative process in an atmosphere which is not wholly confined by established routines based on the accumulation of wealth.  Here it's not uncommon to find these little gems located maybe an hour or so away from some major town (or small city) in a hamlet which may only have a single street light. What I really enjoy is when these places will put on their own little art festival to try to raise awareness of their work in a communal fashion.  Their festivals always seem to have a very charming feel to them which often conjures up images in my mind of late 19th or early 20th century small town life, just prior to the moment when our modern electrified world took hold and began pushing the limits of speed and mass production into every corner of our lives.  There's an island located about 90 minutes from here, nestled snugly in the straits between the two great lakes of Huron and Michigan called Mackinac Island.  On the island there exists only two motorized vehicles, the town's ambulance and its fire engine.  Everyone else, residents as well as tourists, must either walk, go on horseback, or else use horse drawn carriages to explore the wooded interior of the island. I don't even believe that bicycles are allowed because they travel too fast.  It's like going back in time to a period before we, as a civilization, lost our innocence.  Needles to say it's a place that attracts a large number of highly creative people, especially in the spring and fall months which lie between the harsh, snow swept, winters and the far more noisy summer tourist season.  (Looking above at everything I wrote.)  I guess that I got a little carried away by your idea of a literary community, sorry about that.  But, I confess, I have always had a similar desire to live in such a place where I could hold the noisy outside world at bay and live within the realm of my imagination.  I hope, my friend, that one day your secret desire comes to fruition.  -Kurt
