Have you ever realized that most forms of art are entirely passive? I am
here, listening to your music, and you are there, on the stage singing a
beautiful love song, so beautiful I'm feeling terribly sad and just wanna
jump to the stage and hold the guy who is singing it.
In fact, most forms of music performance are like this: me listening and you
performing on the stage. Why not subvert that? Why not establish a kind of
interaction between the performer and the audience? Just for the sake of
fun. Just for the sake of doing something different. Just for the sake of
doing something natural. Because art is celebration. And we must celebrate
ourselves to the others. Singer and audience.
Team Plastique does that. And they are excellent in subverting that paradigm
of art. They are a german-based electronic "sushi-punk posers"
( http://www.team-plastique.com/bio.htm) and they are:
Legs Akimbo, australian (very hot and an excellent performer)
Psykat, australia (a great performer!!!)
Axel Danke Schoen, german (a great guitar player)
They interact with the audience in the most crazy way. I was at their
concert in Lounge Bar, in Portugal and it was a fantastic experience. They
literally destroyed a pineapple in front of our eyes (we drank some of the
juice of course! ), they made a battle of cookies, they wrapped us in a
kind of plastic, with them almost naked on stage. In their own words, it's
liberating and fun, without the seriousness of most intellectual music
makers.
It's also nice to see that they make reference (in their CD) to Andy Warhol
and Factory. In fact, I always thought that Factory guys were a bunch of
freaks, without pleasure and devoid of life. Of course, art isn't always
nice to see, art can be tough, can be rude, can be also intellectually
stimulant and beautiful. Andy Warhol is considered a genius, Velvet
Underground are an excellent band, Nico was beautiful in her own way. But
they were devoid of life, too. I remember reading an article about a concert
Lou Reed made in Portugal in 1979. He came here, went to the stage, said
fuck you I have to leave and the concert wasn't. Somebody who says fuck you
to the audience doesn't have fun. Most artists don't have fun, don't feel
what they're doing. And we need that. Urgently.
