Today I went to two spectacular exhibiotions in CCB, the most famous cultural centre in Lisbon. The first one was dedicated to the collection of Helga de Alvear, a spanish gallery. I found there works from Philip Lorca Dicorcia, Dan Flavin, etc. It was so nice and so different, from paintings to sculptures, short films, multimedia presentations, etc.

(Philip Lorca Dicorcia, "Bret Booth, 21, Des Moines, Iowa", 1990-1992)
The second exhibition was dedicated to the works of Jorge Martins, a portuguese painter. It was also very, very interesting. The author was there, talking about his works with some friends, why he did it that way or the other, discussing the colours he used, etc. Boring like hell. I even hadn't the patience to read the explanations of the pictures and I think it useless. A work of art needs to be experienced and not thought of. Of course, we might make some interpretations of it, but the essence of painting, writing, contemplating lies in our direct experience. And we must get rid of what seems to be the real meaning of the work.
I am a poet and, sometimes, I cannot even describe what is the meaning of my own words. I simply receive words and put them into paper. Well, not so often. Most of the time, I use a part of my conscience to turn a bunch of words into something beautiful. But my best poems are the spontaneous ones. And only with intuition and inspiration can we create a work of genius.
A suggestion: don't think when you are seeing a work of art, just be. just see. just hear.
