Somedays good just comes out of the blue.
Northwest Airlines just sent me a check for 600 dollars... Why, exactly I have no idea.
The check was for 33 hours of vacation I had in reserve whe I was laid off in 2001. BEcause of 9/11 and a poor union contratc they managed to lay me off with no severance and wihtout paying my back log of sick and vacation time. Apparently for osme reaosn they saw fit to do so now.
The really funny part is the check showed the day after my father retired from the same airline. I like the idea that they are just happy to se him go and celebrating
Of course oit does come on a sad day.. the NWA mechanics are no officialy on strike. They refused to take a rediculous pay cut for an airline that refuses to charge a sane price for tickets. All NWA maintenace is now done by underpaid and undertrained scabs... remeber this when you buy your next plane ticket.
And just so you know... This is the direction all airlines are headed. The industry is trending towards busting the unions and paying almost nothing for mechanics and shipping all of the heavy work overseas to foriegn vendors. Of course the down side is that the work done at these 3rd party facilities is sub standard... when I worked for the airlines I spent much of my time finding and fixing their mistakes. There have been times where there mistakes *could* have resulted in dangerous or catastophic failure.
Why are they neglecting maintnenace and safety? Because they choose to base their marketing not on profit margin buton market share and are charging LESS now for a ticket then they did in 1970 even thought EVERY cost to operate has gone UP.
Mark my words, in the next 5 years there WILL be a air disater invoving a major domestic carrier that revolves around a maintnenace issue.
