I bought Neutral Milk Hotel's "In an Aeroplane over the Sea" today, after having heard it in passing a few times and being interrested in it. I'm quite pleased. It's a very delicate album. What I mean by that is that while it appears very clumsy and fumbling on a surface level, it's actually a very intricate piece of work, and there are a lot of interdependant elements. one of the things that really impresses me are the rock songs that are intentionally produced to sound like shit. when this album gets loud, it gets loud enough to pass the equipment's capabilities and clip. Why would anyone do this? I don't know, and I'm powerless to explain why it works, but it does. Isolating or skipping tracks on this album is a terrible mistake. a few standout tracks hold their own well appart from their context, but it should really only be listened to as a whole.
