Mercenary...Not Patriot
The Dropkick Murphy show last night was great. Lost most of my voice singing my ass off during all three sets. Barely had enough air in my lungs when I got on stage during the final song Skinhead on the MTBA. Even got to shake Ken Casey's hand and sort him out with one of my war coins. The lead singer for the Tossers was so drunk he barely knew where he was, the set was still great. Was in the minority of people who didn't raise their hand when asked if this was the first time seeing Sick of it All. Good to here some good old school hardcore, got to see a chicken fight and a 300 pound man trying to pogo. The Horror Pops did not play due to the Munster Machine dying outside of Atlanta. Was really wanting to see them and so were the pscychobilly kids that showed up. Ended up at the Girls' place after the show, stoping of at the Califorina Chicken Grill (need a break from Krystals). She ended up sleep while I write this. This also gave me the opertunity to watch Gunner Palace. This got me thinking.
In 2004, I spent a good amount of time in Northern Iraq. Was a member of a 13 man team there for the "peace keeping" mission. In all reality, I didn't really care to be there. The only good thing was that the majority of the team were good people. My trip got of to a bad start when my C.O. got in front of the new arrivals and said " The reason you are hear is because you are sitting 30 miles away from 6% of the worlds oil supple. People always say they want the truth, got a slice of it dripping from the mouth of a southerner with just a bit of chewing tabacoo. Should have not come back a few times here and there. Some because of a special talent I hold for going into situation most wouldn't. The reason I bring this up is that in a way I miss it. Sad huh. most would love to come home and stay there, yet the first thing I wanted to do after I got enough beer and really red meat in me was to return. Still dream about the place once and awhile. When you can still sleep after having a 122 mm motar round drop in your area, there is something wrong with your wiring. That life is behind me now. Been thinking of it more because some friends have just returned. I saw what they went through and could only think that I should have been there. Used to say to people that I wasn't a patriot, was a merc there to protect my friends from the enemy, both forien and domestic.
Sorry to lay such shit on you people. Thats just were I have been in my mind for a sec or two. Kinda in a transition phase now and reflecting is something you do. To end on a funny note. A non violent solution for Emo was proposed by Sick of it All's lead singer. He said if you see an emo kid, go up to him, hug him and tell him stop being a pussy and go talk to a girl. Hey, I thought it was funny.

Are you talking about that huge dude who fainted right in front of that building on the right side of the stage?? If so, we were right in front of him, a rickety old couple holding onto the railing (or beers, whatever your perspective may be) for dear life, me in a scally cap and the usual 15 hole red laced docs. Matt in Manic Hispanic shirt, long flat top and vangogh goatee.
mattsme has seen SOIA many times. Me, this was the first. I'm a new fan. God are they good. Pretty agile for a bunch of old codgers.
I didn't think DKM was gonna play Skinhead. But they did. We were trotting on out when they started playing. Sorry I missed it, I hope they always play it even if I can't get into the "Sunshine Highway" drivel these days.
Intersting stuff on your Iraq experience. I will be sure to keep in touch with your writings here. If you have another blog lemme know.
Slainte!!
