Foaming At The Mouth
I can remember when this area was all fields -- and I liked it a lot better then

Oh, fuck, have I been looking forward to this. I've got five days out in the Northwest suburbs and man I am gonna rip that place a new asshole!!! Shit I've already got a list of all the places I am gonna go to for lunch. I'm gonna get sushi from the Japanese mall out in Rolling Meadows, I'm gonna go to the lunch buffet at the El Sombrero, hell, I'll probably go to Jay's and get cheese dogs and cheese fries for breakfast one morning. And that's just before dinner time! After hours, those Mount Prospect motherfuckers won't know what hit 'em! I'll go get a few drinks at The Stadium, for sure a few at Ye Olde Town Inn in downtown Mount Prospect, maybe even hit the BW3's out by Randhurst Mall. Goddamn, I am gonna have a hell of a time!!

So to make a long story short, I've spent the day and will spend the rest of this week housesitting out in the suburbs. My sarcastic intro notwithstanding, it isn't that bad. That said, it is most definitely a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live here. I grew up out here, graduated from high school, and went to college with this house in Mount Prospect as my permanent mailing address. After my freshman year I had a summer job in downtown Chicago (and a second job there as well before the summer ended). The experiences I had right away were more than enough indication, at the age of eighteen, that the suburbs were fit only as a place to hang my clothes and recover from benders before diving back into the city.

And yet, I have run into more and more people over the years who never budged out of the sallow comforts of keeping the action at arm's length. These are people I grew up with and figured would also be jockeying for apartments in Lincoln Park even before we were legal adults, and I find that they chose townhouses in Prospect Heights. I saw one (everso briefly and certain she didn't even see me) at a grocery store in Arlington Heights last weekend as I was stocking up provisions for this week. There she was, ass a yard wide, cheap clothes, barreling up the aisle like an out-of-tune brass band.

It sounds hopelessly evil of me, but I always believed I'd be looking down my nose at what became of a lot of the people I knew when I was fifteen. But it never occurred to me how I'd register that disregard. It never occured to me that they might not push themselves out of the shadow of our former doorsteps.
