Two nights ago as I sat down to write I had one idea to pursue, and in settling in, after browsing X, I ended up with three ideas. Not wanting to have to decide which one to write about, I wrote briefly on all three. Tonight, the opposite occurred: I had three ideas to choose from as I settled in to begin writing, browsed X for a bit, then completely forgot about what I wanted to write about.
I think the lesson here is to not browse X before completing my blog for the night.
I have found that for me, writing on a specific topic can be troublesome unless I have a clear idea of what my main points will be. Without some clear direction, I tend to fumble through a piece, constantly having to switch gears, and ending up with a messy draft that requires heavy editing. I do far better, I feel, when I have no idea and I just start writing; what results is often better than when I write from some vague idea. However, my best writing happens when I work from an outline.
About a decade ago, I learned to “always go in with a plan.” It’s solid advice and has served me well ever since.
