Writing for the Sake of Writing

It’s been a fun past couple of days surrounding the holiday, but at some point, things gotta resettle. And I need to get back to my writing.

I almost didn’t write tonight. The past few days have been a wild mix of booze and other illicit substances, shared with close friends across late nights, a hot tub, and a fire. Being present meant it was easy enough to shirk off my work for a bit, and as a result, made it easy to want to shirk it off awhile longer. However, given that I’ve recently begun writing consistently, that “awhile longer” would have turned into indefinitely.

Isn’t it interesting, the whole process of forming a habit? In the beginning, it takes discipline to show up regularly. Each time you show up, it makes it just a little bit easier to show up the next time. Showing up becomes automatic eventually, but it takes time and herculean effort to arrive there. Beginnings are so delicate, requiring focus to begin the process of developing a habit, and a time where that development can come to a grinding halt without any effort at all. The beginning, more than any other time in the process, is when showing up matters the most.

So here I am, writing about writing and habit development because I need to write about something, and I need to remind myself why I need to continue showing up. A bit meta, I suppose, but still valuable if for no other reason than I’m showing up and doing the damn thing. It’s the beginning, and I need to stay focused and disciplined to successfully build this habit of daily writing.
