I was in the Navy working in a weapons lab and had come up with a new defensive material for war ships, air craft and military vehicles of all kinds. It was a molecular sized nano-tube material that, when activated, would cause a quantum phase shift of any energy or matter (same thing) that struck it. So a cruise missile warhead would be phase shifted at the quantum level and fall harmlessly into the ocean or to the ground leaving barely a dent in the structure it had hit.

This one evening the brass had put together a social, well a dance actually wherein they were bringing in a bunch of young women from a college nearby. They would be wearing corsages and we would have a flower and we just had to find the woman wearing a corsage that matched our flower and that was our "date" for the evening.

I found mine right away and she was exactly perfect. We talked for hours and were walking through the park while I told her about my job in naval weapons. Just then my commanding officer came up and looked at us in a puzzling sort of way and I thought "oh my god, he wants me to introduce her and I've forgotten her name." As I started to apologize and ask her, he said, "excuse me, I just wanted to tell you that we're all impressed with the new quantum weapon you've developed and we're going to send you to Annapolis on a full scholarship if you'll sign up for another 6 years. In fact, if you do well there, the Navy will see that you get a Ph.D. so long as you sign up for service."

She was impressed and asked if she could go along with me.

I didn't answer and we got into my car and started for the freeway.

Then I woke up.

you would think that personal and intimate interaction makes you significant to at least that one person's life. not so. not so at all.
