i know my journal lately has become sort of like the SG obituaries. but there is another death worth mentioning that happened yesterday. or maybe i should say, a life that ended.
Gordon Parks, probably best known for directing the original Shaft, passed away at the age of 93.
Parks was the first leading black film director in Hollywood. in 1969, he wrote and directed The Learning Tree, adapted from his autobiographical novel.
He was also the first african american photographer for LIFE magazine. it was a career that started in 1948 nd went to 1968.
Parks was also a poet, a musician and even wrote a ballet.
he once said, I think most people can do a whole lot more if they just try. They just dont have the confidence that they can write a novel or they can write poetry or they can take pictures or paint or whatever, and so they dont do it, and they leave the planet dissatisfied with themselves.
i think if there is anyone to look up to and strive to be like, it's Gordon Parks. what amazing person.
