Meeting new people isn't the easiest thing to do especially after graduating college. Yes, you may meet friends of friends and expand your circle of acquaintances however throwing yourself out there to meet new people is a tad bit more difficult. Anyway that was my plan last Thursday when I went to see the Pretty Things Peepshow at the Highline Ballroom. I first heard of the event when siamkittie posted about it on the SGNY open events, it quickly drew my attention because I am growing to enjoy burlesque more and more, it was a carnival/Vaudeville and most importantly I would be able to connect with some new people. I was a bit nervous considering I am pretty shy (I mask it really well at times) and would be meeting new people also I knew I would be getting out of work late and I would be looking for a girl with black and hot pink knee high socks and black rain boots. I got there and saw that so many people were seated and was like, "fuck, how am I supposed to look for knee high socks when everyone is seated down at tables?!" but I vowed not to give up. Fortunately for me I was standing at the bar ordering my second beer when siamkittie walks in with a group and I noticed the socks and introduced myself (pretty sure I caught her a bit off guard lol). I meet her and her friend as well as a few other members of the site, we sat upstairs (with others) and ordered some drinks.

I must say I had a lot of fun for a Thursday and definitely stayed out later than I probably should have (it was a long Friday) but it was worth it. The show was great (Jules was fantastic, I want to go back in March) and it turned out I had seen two of the performers at the Coney Island Sideshow back in summer 2007.

The company was great, everyone is friendly and it was nice just to go out see a show and grab drinks with a new group of people. It's definitely one thing chatting or posting on the message boards perhaps befriending someone here and there but going out and actually meeting someone face to face is so much more rewarding. I hope to get to see some of the people that I meet on Thursday pretty soon whether it be grabbing drinks or seeing some other sort of show or just wandering around the city looking for something different to do. There is such a greater sense of community when you go out and mingle and it just feels plain old nice (which is a good thing). Anyone reading this who has pondered going out and meeting others from the site, I highly recommend it just throw yourself out there!
